Overview

Harmony Hill 1629 Taylor Street San Francisco, California 94133

I love sharing the story of my five-generation 'secret garden' atop San Francisco's historic Russian Hill.
After her visit, Rosmary Verey asked me to write the first chapter in her book 'Secret Gardens'. Frank Cabot called the garden 'luminous.'

Topics

  • I grew up in this magical garden, hated to leave at age nine, and missed it ever after.
What a joy come home again, buy the house from my uncle for a song, and raise my two children here beneath a mighty cork oak that my grandmother had planted in her garden uphill.

  • After a party-loving-bachelor had rented the house and let the garden go wild for for thirty
  • years, I faced three years of ripping out ivy,
  • Then I began to learn from experts about fragrant woodland perennials and ornamental trees.  When the grand dame of English gardening,  Rosemary Verey, came to visit, she and asked me to write about growing up here. My essay, 'A Child's Inheritance,' became the first chaper of her book, Secret Gardens. (Ebury Press, London, 1992)
  • When garden writer, Joan Hockaday, my neighbor and friend, brought Frank Cabot, founder of The Garden Conservancy, to visit, his word for this garden was 'numinous.'
  • Enchanted into joining and supporting the Garden Conservancy, and I now sit on its West Coast Councll.
  • As a writer, storyteller, and recording artist of of fairy tales from around the world and seasonal nature myths. You can see and sample my work @ www.beatricebowles.com.  I would love to tell you and your friends the rest of the story. My garden and all of nature inspires me every day.

A Most Lovely Afternoon

Jane R. Poppelreiter from SAan Francisco, C - 04/30/2019 19:38:54

Our group, The St. Francis Wood Garden Club, had the privilege of being invited to the most delightful home of Beatrice Bowles. Beatrice is as charming as she is entertaining, and we heard wonderful stories about her family history, long time home, and amazing gardens. We had a change to spend time touring the home as well as time wandering the fanciful gardens of her hillside garden. Every member commented that it was the best outing and speaker that we have ever had, and I can't agree more. - Jane R. Poppelreiter, Program Director, St. Francis Wood Garden Club
