Description

BIO

Born in England, I grew up with a trowel in my hand.

After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 I joined one of the leading garden nurseries as a garden plant specialist. Helping hundreds of customers create beautiful combinations of plants to enhance their outdoor living spaces was always a delight. Ten years later I established Le jardinet in order to provide a service that takes all the time, stress and guesswork out of the design process for you.

In the recent past I have taught container gardening  at Edmonds Community College, and continue to teach both container and landscape design in occasional workshops and events as well offering a range of online learning opportunities through Craftsy and Garden Gate Magazine.

With excellent reviews on the Great Garden Speakers website, I frequently give presentations at flower & garden shows, trade conferences, horticultural organizations, nurseries and garden clubs.

When I’m not teaching garden design or talking about it I am usually writing about it, and my articles and design have been featured in many national gardening publications including Fine Gardening, Country Gardens, Sunset, and Garden Design. I have co-authored two books with Christina Salwitz, award winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press, 2013) and the highly acclaimed Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press, 2017), while my latest book Deer-Resistant Design (Timber Press, 2019) is receiving excellent reviews.

Specializing in creating artistic plant combinations with a four season foliage framework, functional outdoor living spaces and deer resistant, summer-dry designs, it would give me great pleasure to share my love of gardening with you.

Topics

I regularly present seminars  to trade organizations, international Flower & Garden Shows, Master Gardener conferences, Horticultural Societies, private groups, garden clubs and nurseries.

Karen spoke to Lake Forest Park Garden Club . She was well organized & very entertaining. She took memorable vignettes and broke them down into easily understood elements. She is an inspiring speaker. a favorite of our club.

Sassy and Classy!

Zoe M Bolton from DUVALL - 04/09/2019 16:21:48

Karen didn't a spectacular job of introducing both design concepts and color management in a Sassy and Classy Containers presentation in Monroe. I learned so much! I was most interested in learning that old concepts are just that - old - and should be replaced with newer, updated design concepts. I also learned that foliage is key rounding out design.

Fabulous speaker

Mary Palmer from Snohomish WA - 04/08/2019 23:49:40

I’ve heard Karen Chapman speak a number of times and the first words that come to mind are polished, professional, informative and entertaining. Today she was the featured speaker at the Monroe Garden Club here in Washington State. I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all enjoyed her presentation on Container Gardening. Each and every slide was a visual delight full of inspiration. Karen explained the process of plant selection and why particular plants and colors worked together. Karen went on to explain the import role foliage plays in a good design and can be what carries your creation through the who season. Inspiration should always be a take home from any speaker and I came home inspired and ready to plant.
