A Traveling Gardener,

   wandering, wondering, noticing. . . . .

Linda Larson is an advocate for the importance of public green space and the value of nature in our lives. A lifelong lover of flowers, Master Gardener, Faculty Emeritus of Mesa College and gardener in Mesa, Az for over 30 years. Linda writes a monthly "Traveling Gardener" column for the Maricopa County Master Gardener newsletter, Roots & Shoots and AFGC State Newsletter, Greenleaf. One of her earliest memories is of daffodils lining the winding stone path to her grandmother’s door. Linda encourages audiences around the country to discover the beauty and enjoyment of public gardens at home and in their travels. In 2014 she visited 140 gardens in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Continually exploring gardens everywhere she goes, she entertains readers and audiences as she shares her insight and discoveries. Her inviting website offers readers the opportunity to be whisked away on a mini vacation through her colorful narratives and lush photography.

She has released her first collection of essays pulled from her series, A Traveling Gardener. Based in Phoenix’s desert valley, Larson brings readers along on her travels both home and abroad, with a gentle directive that you too, can slow down, notice and enjoy nature’s beauty no matter where you travel. The Traveling Gardener, Wandering, Wondering, Noticing…is available on Amazon. It features a collection of illuminating essays and dazzling photographs that take you on a virtual tour of gardens, some grand and famous, and some surprising jewels hidden away from the mainstream. Part travelogue, part assurance, the essays spotlight the dedication, inspiration, whimsy, healing and discovery involved in cultivating a living, ever changing garden visit.

Potting up Plants

What does your garden have in common with Giverny, the Desert Botanical, Brooklyn Botanical and Alcazar Gardens of Seville Spain?  Flower pots!   Call them what you choose---flowerpots, plant pots, containers or tubs---pots brought our garden plants from all over the world to our own little spot of earth. The pots we find in our gardens today are the result of the evolution of available materials for making pots, plant science and style. “Potting up Plants” is an illustrated look back into the history of flower pots, the changing fashions and garden wisdom provided by these vessels.  Beautiful images from gardens of North America and Europe and Australia illustrate the ideas.

Remarkable Trees

Join me on a journey of remarkable tree encounters in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Africa and Canada. Trees grow older, bigger and stronger than we humans. They feed us, shelter us, amaze us and annoy us.  Throughout human history we celebrate trees in story, song and verse. Trees are often the overlooked, silent backdrop, reaching into the sky with little attention from us, yet without trees there is no us!  An inspiring and life affirming story of the importance of nature in our lives.

A Traveling Gardener

Whether your travels take you to the south of France or south of Florence, AZ, there are spectacular gardens to visit everywhere.  Highlighting the travel opportunities of visiting distinctive landscapes filled with art and architecture, the sense of place and the human benefit of time spent in nature this program is part travelogue, part inspiration and motivation. Beautiful images from gardens of North America, Europe,  will be presented by columnist Linda Larson,  A Traveling Gardener.

The Art of Gardening

Art masterpieces on the walls of great museums and masterpiece gardens throughout the world influence our own backyard gardens. Since Gertrude Jekyll declared that garden making is a fine art equal to painting, gardeners have eagerly used elements of color, line, form and composition. Our gardens become our living artistic creations.  Gardens, like art, affects us, move us, and most importantly touch our emotions. This is why humanity has turned to gardens for conversation, recreation, food and restoration of the spirit. Illustrated with original images from public and private gardens across the U.S, Canada, Australia, Europe, British Isles and Scandinavia. The ideas are sure to delight and inspire listeners to design their own masterpiece garden using five memorable guidelines.

Best View of Our World

Exploring the world one garden at a time is a captivating way to travel. Gardens, both large and small, provide destinations all over the globe offering a sense of place experience. For every garden, those who planted the seeds and arranged the ground have stories to tell: stories of the homes they built, the social structure of the day, the power and struggle required to make a garden. Drawing from personal travel to over 750 gardens in 25 countries and 48 U.S. states this program combines travel adventure and garden stories illustrated with nature’s beauty, curiosities, and wonders.

Fun, Informative Speaker

Pat Bunkley from Sin Lakes, AZ - 01/11/2018 18:45:43

Linda presented “The Art of the Garden” at Weeders Garden Club today. This was my third time to hear her...each time a different gardening topic. She always uses beautiful photographs that she and her husband have taken at gardens around the world to illustrate her points. Linda is an inspiring speaker (and gardener), humorous and informative. Don’t miss an opportunity to hear one of her presentations.

Linda Larson is one of the best speakers our garden club has had. She moved from one section of her talk to the next with such ease so it was easy to follow. Her command of the material was excellent. Her power point was very well done with wonderful photos.
